l Biological Information |
Biochem/Physiol Actions | Zidovudine is a synthetic dideoxynucleoside. After intracellular phosphorylation to its active metabolite, zidovudine inhibits DNA polymerase, resulting in the inhibition of DNA replication and cell death. This agent also decreases levels of available pyrimidines. |
Application | 1. Antimetabolites Drugs that are chemically similar to naturally occurring metabolites, but differ enough to interfere with normal metabolic pathways. (From AMA Drug Evaluations Annual, 1994, p2033) 2. Anti-HIV Agents Agents used to treat AIDS and/or stop the spread of the HIV infection. These do not include drugs used to treat symptoms or opportunistic infections associated with AIDS. 3. Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors Inhibitors of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that synthesizes DNA on an RNA template. |
