l  Biological Information

Biochem/Physiol   Actions

Gabapentin is a synthetic analogue of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid with anticonvulsant activity. Although its exact mechanism of action is unknown, gabapentin appears to inhibit excitatory neuron activity. This agent also exhibits analgesic properties.

Gabapentin has high lipid solubility, is not metabolized by the liver, has no protein binding, and doesn't possess the usual drug interactions.

Application

1.      Calcium Channel Blockers

A class of drugs that act by selective inhibition of calcium influx through cellular membranes.

2.      Analgesics

Compounds capable of relieving pain without the loss of CONSCIOUSNESS.

3.      Anticonvulsants

Drugs used to prevent SEIZURES or reduce their severity.

4.      Antiparkinson Agents

Agents used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The most commonly used drugs act on the dopaminergic system in the striatum and basal ganglia or are centrally acting muscarinic antagonists.

5.      Anti-Anxiety Agents

Agents that alleviate ANXIETY, tension, and ANXIETY DISORDERS, promote sedation, and have a calming effect without affecting clarity of consciousness or neurologic conditions. ADRENERGIC   BETA-ANTAGONISTS are commonly used in the symptomatic treatment of anxiety but are not included here.

6.      Antimanic Agents

Agents that are used to treat bipolar disorders or mania associated with other affective disorders.

7.      Excitatory Amino Acid Antagonists

Drugs that bind to but do not activate excitatory amino acid receptors, thereby blocking the actions of agonists.
