l Biological Information |
Biochem/Physiol Actions | Eukaryotic cells contain two different isozymes of malate dehydrogenase: mitochondrial (m-MDH) and soluble or cytoplasmic (s-MDH). This product consists of the mitochondrial form. The enzyme catalyzes the following reaction:Oxaloacetate + β-NADH → L-Malate + β-NAD Malic Dehydrogenase can be reversibly inactivated by treatment with pyridoxal 5′-phosphate at 25 °C. |
Application | Malic dehydrogenase has been used in a study to assess the comparative molluscicidal action of Ginko biloba extract on snail hosts. It has also been used in a study to investigate the effect of early feed restriction on metabolic programming and compensatory growth in broiler chickens. |
Unit Definition | One unit will convert 1.0 μmole of oxalacetate and β-NADH to L-malate and β-NAD per min at pH 7.5 at 25 °C. |
